About Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi)

Other · Nearby

The Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi) in Basavanagudi houses one of the largest Nandi (Shiva's bull) monoliths in the world, carved from a single grey granite boulder. Built by Kempegowda I in the 16th century, the temple is an integral part of Bangalore's identity. Legend holds that the Nandi statue continues to grow, and the metallic ring placed around its neck was an attempt to stop the growth. The temple hosts the 'Kadalekayi Parishe' (Peanut Fair) every November — one of Bangalore's oldest and most beloved cultural festivals. The adjacent Dodda Ganesha temple houses an equally large Ganesha idol.
