About Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, centered around the Bhadra Reservoir in Chikkamagaluru district, is a tiger reserve that combines forest safaris with backwater experiences. The sanctuary spans 493 sq km of moist deciduous forest in the Western Ghats, with the Bhadra River and its reservoir creating a picturesque landscape. The Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) operated River Tern Lodge serves as the main base for wildlife activities, offering jeep safaris into the Muthodi forest range and boat safaris on the reservoir. Tiger and elephant populations have been growing here, though dense forest cover means sightings require patience. The reservoir attracts large numbers of river terns (hence the lodge name) and other waterbirds. The sanctuary is less commercialized than Bandipur or Kabini, offering a quieter wildlife experience.
