About Halebidu Hoysaleswara Temple
Located just 16 km from Belur, the Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu is a twin temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the 12th century, it features over 340 large relief panels depicting the life and times of the era, alongside epic scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Unlike most temples, it was never completed — yet the existing carvings are considered the finest in all of Hoysala architecture. The temple's soapstone medium allowed for incredibly deep undercut carvings, creating shadows and textures impossible in granite. In September 2023, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside Belur and Somanathapura.
