About Lepakshi Veerabhadra Temple
The Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi is the most profound representative of the Vijayanagara architectural style within the Bangalore radius. Built in the 16th century, it features the famous 'Hanging Pillar' — a structural pillar that does not fully rest on the ground, puzzling engineers for centuries. The temple houses India's largest monolithic Nandi statue, carved from a single granite boulder standing 15 feet high. The ceiling and walls are adorned with vibrant frescoes depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. The Natya Mantapa (dance hall) with its 70 pillars showcases monolithic 'musical' pillars and rearing equestrian sculptures typical of Vijayanagara monumentalism.
