About Savandurga Temple
Savandurga is Asia's largest monolith hill, featuring two peaks — Karigudda (black hill) and Biligudda (white hill). At the base sits the Savandurga Veerabhadra Temple and the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, both dating to the Vijayanagara era. The hill was fortified by successive rulers including Kempegowda, Hyder Ali, and Tipu Sultan. The trek to the summit is challenging and was temporarily banned due to safety concerns but has been intermittently reopened. The nearby Manchanabele Dam and Arkavathi river add to the day-trip appeal. Rock climbing enthusiasts frequent the granite faces.
