About Bandipur National Park
Bandipur National Park, established in 1974, is one of India's premier tiger reserves and forms part of the massive Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve along with Nagarhole, Mudumalai, and Wayanad. Spanning 874 sq km of dry deciduous and moist deciduous forests along the northern slopes of the Nilgiri Hills, Bandipur is home to one of the highest densities of Asian elephants in India. The park operates structured morning and evening safari windows through designated zones. The terrain ranges from gentle slopes with teak and sandalwood to grassy clearings where large herds of gaur, spotted deer, and sambar congregate. Tiger sightings are possible but require patience — the park's thick forest cover makes big cat encounters less frequent than open grassland reserves. The drive from Bangalore through Mysore is scenic, making this the most accessible big-game wildlife experience from the city.
