About Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, located on the banks of the Cauvery River near Srirangapatna, is Karnataka's largest bird sanctuary and one of the most important breeding grounds for waterbirds in southern India. The sanctuary comprises six islets formed by the river, which serve as nesting sites for thousands of migratory and resident birds. Boat rides operated by the forest department take visitors past these islets at close range — painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, open-billed storks, cormorants, darters, and river terns nest here in enormous numbers during the breeding season (June–November). Marsh crocodiles are regularly spotted basking on the banks. The sanctuary was championed by the famous ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, and a watchtower provides elevated views of the nesting colonies. Its proximity to Mysore and Srirangapatna makes it an easy add-on to a heritage circuit.
