About Talakadu Panchalinga Temple
Talakadu is a site shrouded in both sand and legend. Historically the capital of the Ganga dynasty, the town was buried under sand dunes, which local folklore attributes to the 'Curse of Talakadu' uttered by Rani Alamelamma. Every twelve years, the 'Panchalinga Darshana' festival draws millions to witness the unearthing of five Shiva temples from the sand — Vaidyanatheshwara, Pataleshwara, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara, and Mallikarjuna. The confluence of the Kaveri river here, known as 'Gaja Teertha,' is considered sacred for ancestral rites. The combination of river-side activities and archaeological mystery makes Talakadu unique.
